THURSDAY, AUGUST 20
Raiders at Texans
Line: Texans -1.5 | Total 40.5
Houston: C.J. Stroud is expected to get preseason work after sitting the opener, likely a limited appearance before Davis Mills and newly signed Brett Rypien take over. Graham Mertz’s season-ending injury forced Houston to alter its quarterback depth.
Las Vegas: Rookie Fernando Mendoza is one of the more interesting players on Thursday’s slate. He received his first significant work with the No. 1 offense during the joint practice and is expected to play extensively. Kirk Cousins and Aidan O’Connell remain part of the rotation.
The joint practice favored Houston’s defense. The Texans generated consistent pressure and produced interception returns for touchdowns against both Cousins and Mendoza. Houston’s offense also had one of its better camp practices, particularly on the ground.
Injury watch: Texans rookie receiver Jayden Higgins suffered a leg injury in the joint practice but was able to walk off.
Weather: Effectively a non-factor with NRG Stadium’s retractable roof. Outdoor forecast calls for heat and roughly 12-mph winds if the roof were open.
Betting intel: Houston has the potential early-game personnel advantage with Stroud participating, but Las Vegas has considerable developmental motivation behind Mendoza. The Texans’ quarterback situation becomes less impressive once Stroud exits.
49ers at Chargers
Line: 49ers -1.5 | Total 38.5
Chargers: Justin Herbert and the healthy starters are expected to play at least one series. This is Herbert’s first live-game exposure in the new offense.
The bigger development is the offensive line. Starting center Tyler Biadasz was carted off during the joint practice with a left-leg injury and rookie Jake Slaughter replaced him.
San Francisco: Brock Purdy and several starters have been participating in the joint-practice work, but San Francisco’s reserve quarterback situation deserves more attention. Kurtis Rourke has dealt with a chest/rib issue after an excellent opener, potentially leaving Adrian Martinez with substantial snaps.
The Chargers clearly had the better offensive showing in the joint practice. Herbert repeatedly created explosive passing plays, while Purdy acknowledged San Francisco did not have its best day.
49ers injuries: Christian McCaffrey continues to be handled cautiously, while Mike Evans has dealt with quad/ankle tightness. Nick Bosa is also being brought along cautiously.
Weather: Approximately 78 degrees with winds around 5 mph. No meaningful weather concern.
Betting intel: Herbert’s participation matters most early. For the full game, San Francisco’s quarterback availability and the Chargers’ offensive-line injuries are more significant than the starters’ brief appearances.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 21
Jets at Steelers
Line: Steelers -3.5 | Total 39.5
Jets: Geno Smith’s ankle is the headline. He sat the opener and has returned to full practice work, although he had been showing some effects from the injury. Aaron Glenn has indicated a willingness to play healthy starters, making Smith’s final status important.
Behind him, Cade Klubnik, Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe are competing for jobs, creating meaningful second-half evaluation snaps.
Pittsburgh: Aaron Rodgers remains the major playing-time question. Mike McCarthy has indicated that DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr. are unlikely to play, reducing the incentive to expose Rodgers extensively.
Drew Allar, Mason Rudolph and Will Howard form Pittsburgh’s reserve rotation. Allar is worth watching after an impressive opener and has genuine developmental incentive.
Weather: Roughly 75 degrees, slight shower chance and only about 5-mph winds. No current wind issue.
Betting intel: This could become a backup-QB evaluation game quickly. Smith’s final status is the most important remaining announcement.
Panthers at Jaguars
Line: Jaguars -2.5 | Total 39.5
Jacksonville’s approach is substantially different from Week 1.
Jaguars: Liam Coen has said the starters could play a couple of drives, putting Trevor Lawrence in line for his first preseason game action. Nick Mullens will not play, leaving important developmental work for Carter Bradley and Joey Aguilar.
Carolina: Haynes King will not play. Bryce Young, Kenny Pickett and Kyle Trask are available for the quarterback rotation.
Pickett was extremely efficient but conservative in the opener, completing 16-of-19 passes for only 92 yards.
Weather: Around 85 degrees with a chance of showers, but winds only around 7 mph.
Betting intel: Jacksonville gets a meaningful early-game upgrade from Week 1 if Lawrence and the first unit receive two drives. Mullens’ absence is important later because it forces the Jaguars deeper into their developmental quarterback group.
Packers at Broncos
Line: Broncos -5.5 | Total 41
This is one of the week’s most significant starter games.
Green Bay: Jordan Love and the starters are confirmed to play. Matt LaFleur has indicated this is likely their final preseason game action, giving Friday’s reps added importance.
Denver: Bo Nix and Denver’s starters are also expected to play after Nix sat the opener. Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger follow him.
Green Bay’s reserve quarterback setup features Tyrod Taylor and rookie Kyle McCord.
Weather: The early forecast is the most interesting Friday weather situation: around 90 degrees with a chance of thunderstorms. Winds are currently projected around 9 mph, so this is not yet a wind handicap, but the storm forecast deserves a Friday update.
Betting intel: Unlike many preseason games, both teams have reasons to get meaningful first-unit work. The matchup becomes a much more traditional roster-depth comparison once Love and Nix depart.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 22
Commanders at Lions
Line: Lions -4.5 | Total 37.5
Washington: Marcus Mariota suffered an MCL sprain and is expected to miss the remainder of the preseason. That significantly changes Washington’s quarterback depth.
Any Jayden Daniels appearance would now be followed by Sam Hartman and Athan Kaliakmanis. Hartman directed all three Washington first-half scoring drives in the opener.
Detroit: Dan Campbell traditionally protects established starters in preseason, and Jared Goff is expected to remain out. Detroit should increase Josh Dobbs’ workload after Luke Altmyer handled 22 of the Lions’ 30 pass attempts in Week 1. Dobbs was only recently added after Teddy Bridgewater retired.
Weather: Ford Field eliminates weather concerns.
Betting intel: Mariota’s injury is the major change. Detroit also has incentive to get Dobbs meaningful work because he needs live repetitions in the offense.
Bills at Browns
Line: Browns -2.5 | Total 36.5
This game features one of the week’s most important quarterback competitions.
Cleveland: Shedeur Sanders is scheduled to start after Deshaun Watson started the opener. Todd Monken originally indicated each would get approximately a half as Cleveland continues evaluating its starting job.
Most Cleveland starters have been candidates to play, although the two teams’ joint practices could reduce Saturday workloads.
Buffalo: Josh Allen played and looked sharp in the opener, but another significant appearance is not expected. Kyle Allen and Shane Buechele should receive most of Buffalo’s quarterback work.
Weather: Rain is possible, but projected winds are only around 6 mph.
Betting intel: Sanders’ expected workload is particularly valuable information because these are not meaningless mop-up snaps — Cleveland is conducting a legitimate quarterback competition.
Ravens at Vikings
Line: Vikings -3.5 | Total 36.5
Baltimore: The Ravens are using two joint practices with Minnesota as their primary high-level work. Lamar Jackson and Baltimore’s established stars are unlikely to need significant Saturday exposure.
That leaves another potentially large opportunity for Joe Fagnano, who threw for 224 yards in the opener. Tyler Huntley and Austin Reed are also available.
Minnesota: J.J. McCarthy’s workload is worth monitoring. Carson Wentz led Minnesota in attempts during the opener while all four quarterbacks played. McCarthy should remain one of the more important developmental evaluations.
Weather: U.S. Bank Stadium eliminates weather.
Betting intel: This matchup should be viewed largely through the developmental quarterbacks rather than Jackson or Minnesota’s established personnel. Fagnano’s potential workload is particularly notable.
Falcons at Colts
Line: Colts -3.5 | Total 36.5
Atlanta: The Falcons’ starters will not play, removing Tua Tagovailoa from the game plan. Michael Penix Jr. continues his ACL rehabilitation and isn’t expected to play either.
That creates an important opportunity for Jack Strand, who has received first-team practice work ahead of veteran Cooper Rush.
Indianapolis: Riley Leonard starts, with Anthony Richardson following him. The Colts are deliberately reversing their Week 1 order after Richardson started the opener. Daniel Jones isn’t expected to play during the preseason.
Weather: Lucas Oil Stadium’s roof makes weather a secondary issue.
Betting intel: This is exactly the type of preseason game where quarterback motivation matters. Leonard and Richardson have clearly defined evaluation work, while Strand has a significant opportunity for Atlanta.
Saints at Rams
Line: Rams +3 | Total 37.5
New Orleans: Tyler Shough sat the opener while Spencer Rattler, Zach Wilson and Hunter Dekkers handled the quarterback work. The biggest ongoing competition is Rattler versus Wilson for QB2.
Shough could receive some exposure this week, but the backup competition remains more consequential for total game workload.
Los Angeles: Sean McVay remains one of the league’s most protective preseason coaches. Matthew Stafford and many established Rams are unlikely to play.
Rookie Ty Simpson impressed in extended Week 1 action, throwing 25 passes. Stetson Bennett IV should have incentive to receive more work this week while competing for the backup role.
Weather: Around 84 degrees, clear and approximately 6-mph winds.
Betting intel: New Orleans’ unresolved QB2 competition provides legitimate motivation. Los Angeles remains heavily developmental.
Giants at Dolphins
Line: Giants -2 | Total 37.5
There are quarterback-depth concerns on both sides.
Giants: New York signed Jake Haener this week after Joe Webb retired. Brandon Allen struggled in the opener. Haener could be forced into meaningful snaps despite having very little time in the offense.
Jaxson Dart’s playing time deserves close monitoring because the Giants have also been dealing with offensive-line issues.
Miami: Quinn Ewers has missed practice time, leaving Cam Miller and Mark Gronowski as candidates for substantial work. Malik Willis has also been involved in the quarterback picture.
Weather: Approximately 91 degrees with a chance of thunderstorms. Winds around 8 mph. Heat and storms matter more than wind at this point.
Betting intel: This has one of the week’s shakier potential late-game quarterback environments. Haener’s lack of preparation time is particularly noteworthy if he’s required to play extensively.
Bears at Bengals
Line: Bears -1.5 | Total 37.5
Cincinnati: Joe Burrow played 13 snaps over two series in the opener, but the Bears-Bengals joint-practice workload could dramatically reduce Saturday’s need for first-team snaps.
The Bengals have indicated that the starters’ game workload will be determined by how much quality work they receive against Chicago.
Josh Johnson and Sean Clifford remain the quarterbacks most likely to handle extensive reserve action.
Chicago: Tyson Bagent suffered a hamstring injury against Cleveland and has missed practice time. His status is important because it changes the Bears’ reserve rotation considerably.
Caleb Williams’ workload remains something to monitor rather than assume.
Weather: Slight thunderstorm possibility, approximately 75 degrees and only 6-mph winds.
Betting intel: Bagent’s health and Cincinnati’s post-joint-practice starter decision are the two announcements that could materially alter this matchup.
Eagles at Patriots
Line: Eagles -1.5 | Total 36.5
The two teams have joint practices Wednesday and Thursday, which may be more important than Saturday’s game for established starters.
Philadelphia: Jalen Hurts and the first offense are getting substantial competitive work against New England this week after sitting the opener. That makes significant Saturday exposure less likely.
Philadelphia’s game snaps therefore become especially important for Tanner McKee, Andy Dalton and rookie Cole Payton. Payton provided Philadelphia’s best late-game quarterback spark in the opener.
New England: Drake Maye also sat the opener. Tommy DeVito and Behren Morton handled the quarterback work.
Weather: Chance of showers, approximately 67 degrees and 6-mph winds. Nothing approaching the 15-mph threshold.
Betting intel: The joint practices reduce the need to expose established players Saturday. Reserve quarterback quality should dominate the handicap.
Chiefs at Buccaneers
Line: Buccaneers -5.5 | Total 37.5
Tampa Bay: Baker Mayfield and the starters will play. That’s one of Saturday’s clearest first-team announcements.
Emeka Egbuka isn’t expected to play, however, so Mayfield will be working with a somewhat altered receiving group.
Jalon Daniels was one of Tampa Bay’s most impressive players in the opener and should continue getting developmental work. Jake Browning’s health also affects the rotation.
Kansas City: Patrick Mahomes is not expected to play. Andy Reid wants extensive evaluation of Justin Fields and rookie Garrett Nussmeier, with Chris Oladokun another option.
Weather: Approximately 84 degrees with isolated thunderstorms and 6-mph winds.
Betting intel: Tampa Bay has the clearer early starter commitment. Kansas City has significant quarterback motivation later because Fields and Nussmeier are competing for meaningful roles.
Cowboys at Cardinals
Line: Cardinals -1.5 | Total 37.5
Dallas: Dak Prescott won’t play. The focus is the Joe Milton-Sam Howell backup competition. Howell started the opener, making Milton a logical candidate to start Saturday after the two alternated extensively in practice.
A half apiece would provide both quarterbacks a substantial audition.
Arizona: This is already the Cardinals’ third preseason game because they played in the Hall of Fame Game. Jacoby Brissett, Gardner Minshew and Kedon Slovis handled the previous rotation, while rookie Carson Beck has been dealing with a rib injury.
Jeremiyah Love will not play.
Weather: The outdoor forecast is around 106 degrees, but State Farm Stadium’s retractable roof makes the raw temperature much less relevant if closed.
Betting intel: Dallas has one of Saturday’s cleaner full-game quarterback competitions. Arizona’s extra preseason game and accumulating injuries make its final playing-time plan particularly important.
SUNDAY, AUGUST 23
Seahawks at Titans
Line: Titans -4.5 | Total 38.5
Tennessee: Cam Ward struggled in the opener and should have incentive to receive additional work at home.
The more important injury is Mitch Trubisky, who was hurt in practice Monday. His status could create extensive playing time for Will Levis, making Tennessee’s quarterback rotation much more concentrated than originally expected.
Seattle: Sam Darnold sat the opener. Seattle can continue evaluating Drew Lock and Jalen Milroe, with Milroe carrying the more significant developmental upside.
Weather: Approximately 84 degrees, slight shower chance and only 4-mph winds.
Betting intel: This could feature meaningful young-quarterback exposure on both sides. Ward needs cleaner work after the opener, Levis could see additional snaps because of Trubisky’s injury, and Seattle has every reason to continue evaluating Milroe.
WEEK 2 INTEL WATCHLIST
The most consequential developments still to come are final starter decisions after joint practices. Bears-Bengals, Ravens-Vikings, Eagles-Patriots and Bills-Browns are especially susceptible to late workload changes because coaches can decide they’ve already received enough competitive first-team work.
The quarterback situations with the most betting relevance currently include Fernando Mendoza for Las Vegas, Shedeur Sanders for Cleveland, Riley Leonard/Anthony Richardson for Indianapolis, Joe Fagnano for Baltimore, the Rattler-Wilson battle for New Orleans, Fields/Nussmeier for Kansas City, Milton/Howell for Dallas and the potentially expanded Will Levis workload for Tennessee.
Weather is not currently producing a 15-plus-mph sustained-wind game anywhere on the Week 2 board. Denver, Jacksonville, Miami and Tampa deserve the most attention for thunderstorms or rain as kickoff approaches.
