THURSDAY

FLORIDA A&M at No. 7 MIAMI

8:00 ET — Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens — ACC Network

SHORT WEEK IS THE FIRST THING TO KNOW

Florida A&M has an unusually difficult turnaround. The Rattlers played South Carolina State Sunday afternoon, September 6, at Hard Rock Stadium and return to the same building only four days later to face Miami.

FAMU lost that game 31-13 and was held to only 161 total yards. Starting quarterback Isaiah Knowles generated only 94 passing yards before Dustin Fletcher came on in relief and completed 6-of-8 passes for 68 yards. The Rattlers rushed for very little beyond isolated gains; Jamal Hailey managed only 13 yards on 11 carries.

That offensive performance is concerning against a Miami defense that just kept Stanford out of the end zone entirely.

MIAMI’S NEW QUARTERBACK LOOKED IMMEDIATELY COMFORTABLE

Duke transfer Darian Mensah could hardly have produced a better Miami debut. In Friday’s 45-6 victory at Stanford, Mensah completed 27 of 30 passes for 401 yards and five touchdowns.

Sophomore receiver Malachi Toney was even more spectacular: 12 receptions for a school-record 234 yards, breaking Eddie Brown’s 42-year-old Miami single-game receiving record. Mensah and Toney connected for touchdowns on Miami’s first two possessions.

Miami has now scored at least 20 points in 20 consecutive games.

THE FAMU RUN DEFENSE IS AN OBVIOUS PRESSURE POINT

South Carolina State’s Mason Pickett-Hicks shredded FAMU for 210 rushing yards on 17 carries — 12.4 yards per attempt — with two touchdowns. He had scoring runs of 58 and 32 yards.

That’s more alarming than the final score. An FCS opponent repeatedly produced explosive runs before FAMU now faces Miami’s size and speed.

ONE FAMU DEFENDER DEFINITELY FLASHED

Safety Justin Bostic intercepted two passes against South Carolina State, returning one 80 yards for a touchdown. He also tied for the team lead with six tackles.

FAMU’s defense therefore created opportunities even while its offense couldn’t sustain drives. Turnover creation is probably the Rattlers’ most realistic path to preventing the game from getting out of hand immediately.

SCHEDULING/MOTIVATIONAL DYNAMIC

Miami is in an unusual spot itself. The Hurricanes traveled more than 2,500 miles to Stanford for Friday night’s opener and now return to South Florida for a Thursday game.

The difference is that Miami won comfortably enough to manage the second half and has an enormous talent advantage. FAMU is coming off a physical Sunday game and gets only Monday through Wednesday before playing again.

Miami also has a clear developmental incentive: get a young roster extensive game repetitions before the schedule becomes more demanding.

WEATHER

Current forecasts call for temperatures around the mid-80s at kickoff, humid conditions and a modest chance of showers or a nearby thunderstorm. Winds are projected around the high single digits, well below the level at which wind becomes an important passing/kicking factor.

MATCHUP SUMMARY

The largest personnel mismatch Thursday appears to be Miami’s explosive offense against a FAMU defense that just surrendered 210 rushing yards to one FCS running back. FAMU’s even greater concern may be offensive: 161 total yards Sunday doesn’t suggest an offense equipped to maintain possession against Miami.

The four-day turnaround only magnifies those concerns.

FRIDAY

RICHMOND at NC STATE

7:00 ET — Carter-Finley Stadium, Raleigh

DON’T TREAT RICHMOND LIKE A ROUTINE FCS OPPONENT

Richmond is 2-0 and entered last weekend ranked No. 23 in the FCS. The Spiders beat Bucknell 35-14 and then Howard 28-21.

Freshman receiver Bryce Allen has quickly emerged as a big-play weapon. Through two college games he already has seven receptions for 143 yards and three touchdowns. Against Howard, Quanye Veney added three catches for 73 yards, including a 42-yard touchdown, while Sean Clarke produced career highs with seven catches for 80 yards.

That matters because NC State’s defense enters this game with considerably more to prove than anyone anticipated.

NC STATE HAS HAD ALMOST TWO WEEKS TO STEW

The Wolfpack hasn’t played since its ugly 34-8 loss at Virginia on August 29.

Virginia outgained NC State 220-83 in the first half, forced two turnovers and didn’t allow NC State to record a first down until its fourth possession. NC State ultimately surrendered 251 rushing yards on 53 attempts.

NC State therefore gets something Richmond doesn’t: nearly two full weeks to correct its problems.

THIS IS A MAJOR REBOUND/MOTIVATION SPOT

NC State entered the year expecting to compete in the ACC and instead opened with one of the more one-sided losses of Week 0.

There should be little danger of the Wolfpack mentally overlooking Richmond after what happened in Charlottesville. The staff has had video of that performance for almost two weeks, and the home opener now becomes a credibility game rather than merely an FCS tune-up.

WEATHER

The Raleigh forecast currently carries the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms, but conditions are expected to improve toward evening with light winds. Wind does not presently project as a handicapping factor.

MATCHUP SUMMARY

The fascinating variable is preparation time. Richmond is a legitimate, experienced FCS opponent playing its third game in 14 days. NC State is a Power Four team coming off humiliation with nearly two weeks to prepare specifically for this matchup.

That makes NC State’s response — particularly its run defense and early-down offense — one of Friday night’s most revealing storylines.

NORFOLK STATE at VIRGINIA

7:00 ET — Scott Stadium, Charlottesville — ACC Network

VIRGINIA COULDN’T HAVE OPENED MUCH BETTER

Virginia dismantled NC State 34-8 in Week 0 and has been idle since.

The Cavaliers scored the first 24 points, held NC State scoreless on its first eight possessions and ran for 251 yards. Quarterback Beau Pribula was excellent in his Virginia debut, rushing for 110 yards while throwing two touchdown passes.

VIRGINIA’S RECEIVER AND LINEBACKER DEPTH GOT TESTED EARLY

Starting receiver Rico Flores Jr. missed the opener with a hamstring injury. Ty’Lyric Coleman started in his place and played 35 snaps, catching two passes while grading well enough to retain a role even when Flores returns.

Preseason All-ACC linebacker Kam Robinson also sat out against NC State. Junior Myles Brown took advantage, recording eight tackles in only 19 defensive snaps.

Both Flores and Robinson remain personnel situations worth monitoring during the week, but Virginia’s opener demonstrated much better replacement depth than might have been expected.

NORFOLK STATE HAS A PROTECTION PROBLEM

Starter Deljay Bailey completed 14-of-20 passes for 94 yards and scored on a quarterback keeper against Old Dominion, but Norfolk State generated only 220 total yards and committed three turnovers.

The Spartans’ best offensive player Saturday was running back Jalyn Daniels, who had 84 yards on 11 carries — 7.6 per attempt.

TURNOVERS HAVE BEEN KILLING NORFOLK STATE

Two of Norfolk State’s three turnovers against Old Dominion turned directly into touchdowns.

The most painful came on the opening drive. Daniels appeared headed for a 35-yard touchdown but was stripped at the 2-yard line, with ODU recovering in the end zone for a touchback. Norfolk State had driven 93 yards and came away empty.

Against a Virginia defense that forced two first-half turnovers against NC State, ball security becomes an obvious priority.

SCHEDULING EDGE

Norfolk State is playing its second consecutive road game and has only six days between Old Dominion and Virginia.

Virginia has been off since August 29.

That’s an enormous disparity in preparation and recovery time.

WEATHER

Forecasts for Charlottesville currently show relatively light winds and no indication of sustained 15-plus-mph conditions. Precipitation projections differ somewhat among services, so rain bears monitoring later in the week, but wind currently looks insignificant.

MATCHUP SUMMARY

Virginia has the preparation advantage, roster advantage and a quarterback who just demonstrated that defenses must account for him as both a passer and designed runner.

For Norfolk State, the formula is fairly straightforward: protect Bailey better, feed Daniels when possible and eliminate the catastrophic turnovers that turned a competitive performance against ODU into a three-touchdown loss.

No. 18 VILLANOVA at No. 24 LOUISVILLE

7:00 ET — L&N Stadium, Louisville

THE TURNAROUND IS BRUTAL FOR LOUISVILLE

Louisville played No. 9 Ole Miss on Sunday night in Nashville and lost 41-38 on a 48-yard field goal on the final play.

Five days later the Cardinals play again.

This is a genuine emotional-and-physical turnaround spot: Louisville went from a high-intensity national game against a top-10 opponent, rallied from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit, tied it late and then lost at the gun.

LINCOLN KIENHOLZ ANSWERED THE QUARTERBACK QUESTION

In his first Louisville start, Lincoln Kienholz completed 18-of-29 passes for 307 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also led the Cardinals in rushing with 69 yards and a touchdown on 14 attempts.

His second half was especially impressive after Louisville struggled early.

TRE RICHARDSON GIVES LOUISVILLE AN EXPLOSIVE CHESS PIECE

Tre Richardson scored twice in his Louisville debut.

He took his only rush 30 yards for a touchdown and later caught a 62-yard touchdown, finishing with four receptions for 83 yards. Running back Keyjuan Brown added 56 yards on only seven attempts.

The Cardinals scored 32 second-half points, the most Louisville has scored after halftime in any game under Jeff Brohm.

VILLANOVA IS NOT COMING IN AS A SACRIFICIAL FCS TEAM

Villanova is 1-1, losing 35-32 to William & Mary before winning 17-16 at Bucknell.

Quarterback Pat McQuaide threw for 218 yards and two touchdowns against Bucknell. Braden Reed caught both scores, while Ja’briel Mace led the rushing attack with 70 yards.

However, Villanova had only 87 rushing yards and was out-first-downed 22-16 by Bucknell.

LOOKAHEAD ANGLE

Louisville hosts SMU next Saturday, giving the Cardinals an important ACC game immediately after Villanova.

That creates a classic sandwich configuration: emotional top-10 opponent, short-week FCS opponent, major conference game.

WEATHER

Current Louisville forecasts project clear conditions, temperatures falling through the 70s and winds of only about 4-5 mph. Weather should be essentially irrelevant.

MATCHUP SUMMARY

Louisville’s personnel advantage is substantial, but the situation is unusual enough to matter. The Cardinals are only five days removed from a draining last-play loss and have SMU next.

Villanova’s best opportunity is therefore early, before Louisville settles emotionally into the game.

RUTGERS at BOSTON COLLEGE

7:30 ET — Alumni Stadium, Chestnut Hill — ESPN2

THE BIGGEST PERSONNEL STORY: WHO STARTS AT QUARTERBACK FOR RUTGERS?

Rutgers has an actual quarterback decision after its disastrous 37-21 home loss to UMass.

Dylan Lonergan completed 16-of-29 for 242 yards and two touchdowns but threw three interceptions. Backup AJ Surace completed 6-of-9 for 77 yards and a touchdown without an interception after entering later.

Greg Schiano now must decide whether to remain with Lonergan or turn the offense over to Surace.

RUTGERS’ LOSS WASN’T A FLUKE CREATED BY ONE BAD PLAY

Rutgers scored on its opening drive and then allowed 30 consecutive points to a UMass team that entered the game as a massive underdog.

The result immediately creates urgency. Rutgers hosts USC next week, meaning the Scarlet Knights can ill afford to enter Big Ten play 0-2 after losing to UMass and Boston College.

BOSTON COLLEGE ALSO ENTERS 0-1

BC lost 34-15 at Cincinnati, although the box score wasn’t nearly as ugly as the final margin.

Boston College produced 388 total yards to Cincinnati’s 339 and had 24 first downs to Cincinnati’s 17.

Quarterback Mason McKenzie threw for 223 yards and also led BC with 78 rushing yards. Evan Dickens added 47 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Javarius Green led the receivers with 74 yards.

BC’S RUN DEFENSE IS THE CONCERN

Cincinnati ran for 254 yards despite throwing for only 85.

For Rutgers, that may offer the most obvious avenue to simplify whichever quarterback starts: establish the run, reduce obvious passing downs and prevent the turnover avalanche that destroyed the UMass game.

BOTH TEAMS SHOULD BE HIGHLY MOTIVATED

Rutgers is trying to recover from one of the most embarrassing losses of Greg Schiano’s tenure. Boston College is coming off a 2-10 season and began its rebuilt 2026 team with a 19-point defeat.

One of these programs gets a badly needed reset Friday night. The other starts 0-2.

WEATHER

Current Chestnut Hill/Boston forecasts call for temperatures around the upper 60s near kickoff with winds roughly 8-10 mph.

At present, wind is below the threshold for a significant passing-game adjustment, though it merits another check Friday.

MATCHUP SUMMARY

This is probably the most difficult game on the Friday board to evaluate from one week of results.

Rutgers’ quarterback situation is unsettled after a turnover-filled catastrophe. Boston College’s 34-15 loss looked considerably more competitive statistically than the scoreboard suggested, but allowing 254 rushing yards is a serious red flag.

The Rutgers quarterback announcement is the week’s most important piece of information for this matchup.

No. 25 MISSOURI at KANSAS

8:00 ET — David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, Lawrence — FOX

THE BORDER WAR DOESN’T REQUIRE INVENTED MOTIVATION

Missouri and Kansas resumed the rivalry last season, with Missouri winning 42-31 in Columbia.

Now it moves to Lawrence.

Kansas has not hosted Missouri since 2011. This is one of the rare early-season games where motivation needs virtually no embellishment: rivalry, revenge, a prime-time FOX audience and two 1-0 teams.

MISSOURI’S NEW QUARTERBACK WAS NEARLY PERFECT

Ole Miss transfer Austin Simmons completed 17-of-19 passes for 252 yards and four touchdowns in Missouri’s 54-14 opener against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Sophomore receiver Donovan Olugbode caught eight passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns, immediately emerging as Simmons’ primary weapon.

KANSAS WAS JUST AS DOMINANT

Kansas destroyed LIU 51-6 while producing 613 total yards — 336 passing and 277 rushing.

Quarterback Isaiah Marshall threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns and added 49 yards rushing. Nik McMillan exploded for 130 receiving yards, while the Kansas defense held LIU to only 146 total yards.

KANSAS BACKFIELD DEPTH IS ALREADY BEING TESTED

Kansas running back Johnny Thurman is expected to miss the season, while Kenyon Amachree is also currently out. Tight end Carson Moses is questionable and receiver Cam Pickett is questionable with a leg injury.

Kansas still ran for 277 yards against LIU, but the depth becomes more relevant against an SEC defensive front.

MISSOURI HAS ITS OWN AVAILABILITY QUESTIONS

Missouri currently has several players listed questionable:

RB Ahmad Hardy — leg; TE Gavin Hoffman — undisclosed; WR Joshua Brady — undisclosed; OG Cayden Green — undisclosed.

Hardy’s status is particularly important because of his expected role, while Green’s availability matters against the first legitimate defensive front Missouri has faced this season.

MISSOURI’S DEFENSE IS MUCH LESS PROVEN THAN THE NAME ON THE JERSEY

Missouri replaced 10 defensive starters from last season.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff wasn’t equipped to expose that turnover, so Friday represents the first legitimate data point for a largely reconstructed defense. Kansas brings a mobile quarterback and an offense that generated more than 600 yards in its opener.

KANSAS’ MOTIVATIONAL EDGE IS OBVIOUS

Kansas gets the rivalry at home after losing 42-31 in Columbia last season.

The Jayhawks also immediately turn around and visit Arizona State the following week, but there is virtually no realistic lookahead concern here. Missouri is the game Kansas has been waiting for.

WEATHER COULD ACTUALLY MATTER HERE

Lawrence is forecast to be hot — around 90 degrees during the day — with southerly winds around 10-15 mph. Thunderstorm chances increase during the evening.

This is the only Thursday/Friday game where the wind forecast is presently close enough to the 15-mph threshold to warrant serious monitoring.

MATCHUP SUMMARY

This is clearly Friday’s marquee game.

Both quarterbacks looked excellent against weak opening opponents, but neither performance tells us much about how the offenses will function against comparable talent.

The biggest questions entering Friday are whether Kansas’ offensive line and depleted running-back room hold up against Missouri’s front, whether Missouri’s almost entirely rebuilt defense can handle Isaiah Marshall’s dual-threat ability, and which of Missouri’s questionable offensive players is cleared.

EARLY-SEASON ATS/TOTALS NOTE

There isn’t enough 2026 data yet to make current-season ATS or over/under records particularly meaningful. Most FBS teams on this slate have played only one game, while Virginia and NC State have been idle since Week 0.
