Week 0 College Football Pro Bettors Tipsheet — Saturday, August 29

TCU vs. North Carolina — Dublin

The most important late-week development remains on the North Carolina sideline. Defensive coordinator Steve Belichick is not with the team, leaving UNC without the coach who installed and called the defense throughout the offseason. General manager Michael Lombardi is also absent. For bettors, Belichick’s absence matters more because it affects in-game communication, defensive adjustments and responsibility against a TCU offense with an experienced transfer quarterback. (WRAL News)

UNC will start Billy Edwards Jr. at quarterback. He brings substantially more Power-conference experience than most first-year starters, including a 2,881-yard, 15-touchdown season at Maryland in 2024. TCU counters with Jaden Craig, the Harvard transfer who threw 48 touchdown passes against 10 interceptions over the previous two seasons. Craig’s experience limits some of the uncertainty normally attached to a new starting quarterback. (Atlantic Coast Conference)

TCU does have meaningful defensive attrition. Zach Chapman, expected to move into the important STUD edge role, has been dealing with an injury and may not be available. Combined with other offseason losses, TCU could be without three of its four most productive pressure players from last season. The Horned Frogs also lost their presumed starting safety late in camp. That matters because UNC should have more time to protect Edwards than preseason depth charts initially suggested. (Action Network)

UNC’s kicking situation is another under-the-radar handicap. Rece Verhoff is unavailable, leaving LSU transfer Aeron Burrell and freshman David Green as alternatives. Burrell has kickoff experience but no college field-goal attempts, while Green is also unproven at the college level. That increases uncertainty on long field goals and late-game fourth-down decisions.

Weather remains worth monitoring, but wind is not the major issue. Rain has fallen in Dublin and additional showers are possible around kickoff, but sustained wind is around 7-8 mph with gusts near 16 mph — below the threshold where wind normally becomes a major passing/kicking adjustment. Rain and a wet surface are more relevant than ball flight. (Bleacher Report)

NC State at Virginia

The ACC availability report creates a meaningful personnel asymmetry.

NC State is without Isaiah Crowell, Teddy Hoffmann, Gus Ritchey, Rylan Vann, Tyreek Copper, Carmelo McKenzie and JJ Ferguson Jr. The key point for bettors is that none were expected to be primary opening-day starters. Hoffmann is the most notable production loss after catching 25 passes for 349 yards and three touchdowns in 2025, but the Wolfpack had time to adjust after his season-long suspension became known. (Atlantic Coast Conference)

Virginia’s absences touch more potentially meaningful depth. Starting-caliber receiver Rico Flores Jr. is out. Flores transferred from UCLA after catching 26 passes for 274 yards and was expected to work at the X position, so his absence reduces Beau Pribula’s perimeter options. Virginia is also without multiple other receivers, running backs, offensive linemen and defensive linemen. (Atlantic Coast Conference)

The most important Virginia status to monitor is linebacker Kam Robinson, who entered the week questionable. Robinson recorded 64 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and two interceptions in only eight games last season before the ACL injury. He is the projected MIKE linebacker and one of Virginia’s best second-level defenders; limited mobility or a reduced snap count would materially affect the Cavaliers against CJ Bailey’s scrambling ability and NC State’s intermediate passing game.

Virginia will start Beau Pribula, the Missouri transfer who completed 67.4% of his passes for 1,941 yards and 11 touchdowns in 10 starts last season while adding 297 rushing yards and six scores. NC State returns CJ Bailey, who threw for 3,105 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2025 and accounted for three touchdowns against Virginia last season. That gives NC State considerably more continuity at quarterback. (Atlantic Coast Conference)

Virginia’s offensive line is the stabilizing factor. Noah Josey owns 43 career starts and McKale Boley 36, part of one of the ACC’s most experienced fronts. That should help Pribula through his first start in a new offense. (Atlantic Coast Conference)

The motivational context is stronger than a typical opener. The game was originally scheduled for Brazil but was relocated to Charlottesville and still counts as an ACC game. Both teams therefore open with an immediate conference result at stake rather than a conventional nonconference tune-up. Virginia is also coming off an 11-win season and an ACC Championship Game appearance, while NC State has won four straight meetings under Dave Doeren. (Atlantic Coast Conference)

Weather may affect conditioning more than the passing game. Temperatures are expected in the mid-90s with high humidity, with rain potentially arriving around halftime. There is currently no reliable indication of sustained 15+ mph wind. (Covers.com)

San Jose State at USC

USC has the clearest quarterback continuity advantage on the slate. Jayden Maiava returns after throwing for 3,711 yards with 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2025. San Jose State is expected to start Luke Weaver, the Hawaii transfer, after Walker Eget transferred to Duke. Weaver enters with only limited college passing volume. (Free Sports Picks)

The bigger San Jose State issue is wholesale roster turnover. The Spartans lost their quarterback, their top five receivers and major offensive-line experience. Defensively, they lost their three leading tacklers and have had to rebuild the secondary with a large transfer influx. That makes communication and depth a particular concern against Lincoln Riley’s tempo and USC’s skill talent.

USC does have an important offensive-line absence. Starting center Kilian O’Connor is out for the season. He was projected to start for a second consecutive year and was one of the line’s veteran communication pieces. Center is especially important in Riley’s offense because of protection calls and tempo, so USC’s replacement must handle both snaps and pre-snap identification against pressure looks. (Yahoo Sports)

USC also spent camp managing several skill-position injuries, but Maiava remains surrounded by a deep running-back room and enough receiver talent to maintain its offensive structure.

The motivational setup is straightforward: USC enters with playoff-level expectations and considerable pressure on Riley to convert another talented roster into a national contender. San Jose State is more likely to treat the opener as a developmental test because of the extent of its personnel turnover.

Weather is notable for heat, not wind. Forecasts call for roughly 90-92°F around the Coliseum with light wind near 5 mph and essentially no rain. The heat can magnify USC’s depth advantage in the second half, especially against a San Jose State defense replacing so many experienced players. (Free Sports Picks)

Jacksonville State at North Dakota State

This is one of the more important quarterback-transition games.

Jacksonville State returns Caden Creel, who produced 1,514 passing yards and 1,076 rushing yards last season. His rushing ability forces North Dakota State to account for the quarterback as an additional run-gap threat on virtually every read-option snap. (Free Sports Picks)

North Dakota State will turn to fifth-year senior Nathan Hayes after losing Cole Payton. Hayes has spent the last two seasons in a reserve role, so this is his first opportunity to run the offense as the primary starter. The Bison also lost NFL-caliber receiver Bryce Lance.

Jacksonville State has major replacement issues around Creel. Leading rusher Cam Cook is gone, and the offensive line lost three starters who transferred to Power-conference programs. That is significant because Creel completed nearly 70% of his passes when kept clean last season but only 39% under pressure. If the rebuilt line cannot hold up, his efficiency profile changes substantially. (Action Network)

North Dakota State’s offensive line is considered a strength, but the defensive front enters without a proven high-end pass rusher. That makes Creel’s mobility particularly important.

The motivational factor is enormous: this is North Dakota State’s first game as an FBS program. The Fargodome should provide one of the strongest home-field environments of Week 0, and communication for Jacksonville State’s rebuilt offensive line is a legitimate concern.

Weather is irrelevant because the Fargodome is climate-controlled.

Sacramento State at Eastern Michigan

Sacramento State makes its FBS debut with one of the largest roster rebuilds on the board. The Hornets return only six starters and brought in 73 newcomers, including 19 junior-college transfers and 30 four-year transfers. That creates substantial uncertainty in communication, substitutions and early-game execution. (Action Network)

Eastern Michigan has far more offensive continuity. Noah Kim returns at quarterback after throwing for 2,817 yards and 18 touchdowns. Running back Dontae McMillan also returns after exceeding 1,000 rushing yards and averaging better than 5.7 yards per carry. That established QB/RB combination is important against a Sacramento State defense working with numerous new pieces.

Sacramento State’s transition is larger than a normal coaching change. First-year coach Alonzo Carter must simultaneously integrate the roster and move the program into FBS competition. Bettors should expect substitution patterns and position rotations to be less predictable than at established FBS programs.

Eastern Michigan’s principal concern is defensive. The Eagles allowed 232.1 rushing yards per game last season, one of the worst marks in the MAC, so Sacramento State may be able to simplify its offensive installation by emphasizing the run.

Weather should be neutral: high-70s, minimal wind and little rain risk. (Covers.com)

New Mexico State at Florida State

New Mexico State has officially named Trey Hedden its starting quarterback. The Furman transfer threw for more than 4,700 yards over two seasons there, but his interception history is a major concern against the athletic jump he faces in Tallahassee. (Atlantic Coast Conference)

Florida State enters with Ashton Daniels at quarterback and substantially more proven explosiveness around him. Receiver Duce Robinson is the centerpiece after a 1,000-yard season and is joined by Micahi Danzy and a deep running-back group. (Seminoles)

The motivational situation is unusual for a huge favorite. Florida State is coming off two disappointing seasons after its 2023 national-title contention and Mike Norvell faces significantly increased expectations. This is less likely to be treated as a routine tune-up than a typical opener against a heavy underdog.

New Mexico State’s defensive personnel faces a major physical mismatch, particularly against Florida State’s running backs and receivers after allowing 4.4 yards per carry last season.

Tallahassee weather remains worth checking closer to kickoff because of thunderstorm risk, but current forecasts do notshow sustained winds near 15 mph. Any betting effect is more likely to come from lightning delays or intermittent rain than wind.

Hawaii at Stanford

This matchup has important late-week personnel concerns on both offenses.

Hawaii returns Micah Alejado, who averaged 282.4 passing yards per game last season and produced four consecutive 300-yard passing games late in the year. That continuity is valuable because the Rainbow Warriors are replacing most of their receiving production. (University of Hawai’i at Manoa Athletics)

The biggest Hawaii concern is Pofele Ashlock, who has been dealing with an undisclosed injury and was listed doubtful in the latest widely available injury reporting. Ashlock caught 76 passes for 827 yards and eight touchdowns last season. Combined with Jackson Harris transferring to LSU after 963 yards and 12 touchdowns, Hawaii could enter the opener without its top two 2025 receivers. That would leave Alejado throwing to a largely rebuilt wideout rotation. (Covers.com)

Stanford has its own offensive problems. As many as three of the projected five starting offensive linemen have been dealing with injuries. That is critical because the Cardinal are also breaking in a new quarterback and new offensive structure. (Covers.com)

Davis Warren is expected to take the quarterback job after transferring from Michigan. He missed all of 2025 following an ACL injury, so this will be his first meaningful game action in roughly 20 months. Stanford had maintained a competitive quarterback room through camp, but Warren’s experience gave him the inside track.

Tavita Pritchard makes his head-coaching debut for Stanford, while Timmy Chang returns with an established quarterback and an offense Alejado already knows. (Atlantic Coast Conference)

Weather should not materially affect the game. Winds are expected to remain mild, with no 15+ mph sustained-wind issue currently indicated. (Covers.com)

Memphis at UNLV

Both quarterback rooms require attention because neither side enters with a completely conventional one-quarterback setup.

Memphis has been deciding between Marcus Stokes and Air Noland, with Denzel Gardner also in the room. Stokes arrived from the Division II level, while Noland is the former highly recruited Ohio State quarterback. New head coach Charles Huff also imported a large group of Southern Miss transfers, meaning the offense is undergoing both scheme and personnel change simultaneously. (Underdog Dynasty)

UNLV’s situation is different. Former five-star Jackson Arnold is expected to handle the primary quarterback role, but Dan Mullen has openly indicated Alex Orji may also play. That creates a potential package system with Orji used for designed quarterback runs and short-yardage situations. Orji is returning from the LCL and hamstring injuries that ended his 2025 season early. (Underdog Dynasty)

UNLV’s most stable offensive asset is running back Jai’Den Thomas, who averaged approximately seven yards per carry last season. Memphis’ defensive rebuild is important here because Huff brought over several Southern Miss defenders, including J’Mond Tapp and Ian Foster, specifically giving the Tigers more experience against physical run games. (Underdog Dynasty)

The motivational factor is significant. Both programs view this as a potential résumé game in the race for the Group-of-Six College Football Playoff berth. UNLV has finished runner-up in the Mountain West three straight years and enters 2026 with an unusually clear path to the league title after Boise State’s departure. Memphis begins the Huff era with similar postseason ambitions.

Weather is a complete non-factor inside Allegiant Stadium.

Weather Watch

There is no Week 0 game on the main Saturday FBS slate currently showing sustained winds of 15 mph or greater. The primary weather issues are rain/wet conditions in Dublin, extreme heat and humidity in Charlottesville, significant heat at USC and possible thunderstorms in Tallahassee. Wind itself does not currently warrant a major adjustment in any of the eight games.
