Friday, September 4 College Football Pro Bettors Tipsheet
Lines are the current working numbers supplied for this slate. Final conference availability reports are not yet universally posted as of Tuesday, so statuses listed as questionable or unresolved should be rechecked Friday. Weather intentionally omitted.
San Jose State at Eastern Michigan — 6:30 PM ET, ESPN+
Eastern Michigan -3.5
Both teams already have useful game evidence, and the biggest takeaway is that the quarterback situations look considerably more stable than they did entering Week 0.
San Jose State lost 42-26 at USC, but Luke Weaver clearly established himself as the quarterback. The Hawaii transfer completed 21-of-32 for 234 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions, added 42 rushing yards and another touchdown, and showed enough mobility to extend plays when protection deteriorated. San Jose State trailed 35-3 before scoring 23 fourth-quarter points, so the final margin overstates how competitive the game was, but Weaver’s individual performance was encouraging even before USC emptied the bench. (SJSU Athletics)
The more important concern is whether San Jose State can consistently generate offense before falling badly behind. USC held the Spartans scoreless in the first half and limited them to 102 rushing yards for the game. Weaver himself led San Jose State with 42 rushing yards, illustrating how little the conventional running game contributed. That matters against an Eastern Michigan defense whose biggest weakness last season was defending the run; San Jose State may not be constructed to exploit that vulnerability consistently. (USC Athletics)
Eastern Michigan’s opener was far cleaner. Noah Kim completed 27-of-38 for 279 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions and added a rushing touchdown in a 28-17 win over Sacramento State. He completed 71.1% of his passes and was named MAC Offensive Player of the Week. This is a fifth-year quarterback operating an offense he already knows, and the experience disparity at the game’s most important position is meaningful. (EMU Eagles)
Eastern also received immediate production from its receiving rotation. Benson Prosper led the team with 81 yards, Kozy Isaac caught a 40-yard touchdown, and Nick Devereaux scored from 31 yards. The Eagles were not particularly effective rushing — only 69 team rushing yards — but Kim’s accuracy allowed them to survive without balance. (EMU Eagles)
Bettor takeaway: Eastern Michigan has the cleaner offensive continuity and more established quarterback. San Jose State showed considerably more life than the 35-3 deficit at USC suggested, but bettors should be careful about extrapolating the fourth-quarter scoring explosion against USC’s reserves. The matchup likely turns on whether Weaver can sustain drives earlier rather than whether San Jose State can suddenly establish a power running game.
Indiana State at Purdue — 7:00 PM ET, BTN
Purdue -35.5
This is an important confidence-building opener for Purdue after Barry Odom’s 2-10 first season.
Ryan Browne is firmly established as Purdue’s starting quarterback after starting all 12 games in 2025. He threw for 2,153 yards and added 206 rushing yards and four touchdowns, but his offseason emphasis has been turnover reduction after throwing more interceptions than touchdowns last season. During August camp, Purdue’s staff said Browne had thrown roughly 14 touchdowns against only one interception in practice. (Purdue Boilermakers)
Purdue should also have considerably more receiving flexibility than it did for much of last season. De’Nylon Morrissette is back after missing all of 2025 with injury. He was expected to play a significant role last year and has returned strongly enough to represent Purdue at Big Ten Media Days. Tight end George Burhenn is also back after playing only four games before his 2025 season ended because of injury; he had nine catches for 94 yards in those four appearances. (Purdue Boilermakers)
That matters because Purdue’s offense desperately needs more explosive options around Browne. The Boilermakers were unable to consistently stretch defenses in 2025, and getting Morrissette and Burhenn back gives Browne experienced middle-of-field and perimeter targets rather than forcing another complete reconstruction.
Indiana State already has a competitive game behind it. The Sycamores lost 23-21 to Southeast Missouri State, but quarterback Elijah Owens threw for 288 yards and two touchdowns. The more problematic element was Indiana State’s inability to consistently run the ball or keep Owens clean. That becomes substantially more dangerous against a Big Ten defensive front.
The motivational component is unusually straightforward for a 35-point favorite. Purdue has lost 10 consecutive games and enters Year 2 under Odom needing visible evidence that the rebuild has advanced. This is therefore less likely to be treated as a meaningless FCS tune-up than it might be for an established winning program.
Purdue has also won 36 consecutive games against opponents outside the FBS level and is 6-0 all-time against Indiana State.
Bettor takeaway: Purdue’s margin is more important than the straight-up result. The return of Morrissette and Burhenn should make Browne’s supporting cast materially better, while Indiana State’s protection problems create the biggest potential mismatch.
North Carolina A&T at Georgia State — 7:00 PM ET, ESPN+
Georgia State -28.5
Georgia State enters Year 3 under Dell McGee after going just 4-20 over his first two seasons, including 1-11 last year. The Panthers nevertheless have much better quarterback continuity than the raw team record suggests.
Cameran Brown is now the unquestioned starter. He appeared in 10 games and started four last season, completing 120 passes for 1,296 yards with 13 touchdowns against only one interception. Brown also rushed for 260 yards and four touchdowns. His best outing included 280 passing yards and 120 rushing yards against Georgia Southern, so he presents legitimate dual-threat stress against an FCS defense. (Georgia State University)
Georgia State also returns meaningful offensive infrastructure. Veteran linemen Donnovan Funsch, Thyler Williams and Deandre Duffus are back, while the backfield has been supplemented by Georgetown transfer Savion Hart, who rushed for 818 yards and 10 touchdowns last season and finished with 1,041 yards from scrimmage. (Georgia State University)
North Carolina A&T opened with a 17-7 loss to Morgan State. Redshirt freshman quarterback Braxton Thomasreturned from the arm injury that ended his 2025 season and completed 20-of-32 passes for a career-high 240 yards. Nine receivers caught passes, but A&T generated only seven points despite that volume. (North Carolina A&T)
That distinction matters for bettors: Thomas demonstrated that A&T can move the ball between the 20s, but the Aggies did not translate yardage into scoring. Against Georgia State, the concern is whether they can finish drives once the field compresses.
Georgia State itself has undergone another large roster churn — 67 newcomers, including 37 transfers and 24 freshmen— despite returning 50 players. That should temper assumptions that the Panthers will operate like a veteran favorite from the first snap. (Georgia State University)
Motivation is significant. Georgia State has won just one game over its last 12 and is playing its first home season opener of the McGee era. This is a program that badly needs a decisive result before beginning a schedule that includes Kennesaw State, UCF and Northern Illinois.
Bettor takeaway: Georgia State’s strongest advantage is Brown’s efficiency and mobility against an FCS opponent that scored only seven points in its opener. The primary caution is the enormous turnover elsewhere on the Panthers’ roster.
Toledo at Michigan State — 8:00 PM ET, FS1
Michigan State -10
This matchup has considerably more roster volatility than the names suggest.
Michigan State begins the Pat Fitzgerald era, while Toledo opens under former Mercer coach Mike Jacobs. Toledo returns only one starter from last season, one of the lowest totals in FBS, and has 58 newcomers, including 14 players who followed Jacobs from Mercer. (University of Toledo Athletics)
Toledo has settled its quarterback position: John Alan Richter is expected to start. Richter spent the previous two seasons as Toledo’s primary backup and has 699 career passing yards and seven total touchdowns. He suffered an injury in Week 5 last season that kept him out for the remainder of the year, so this is both his first opening-day start and his first meaningful action since the injury. (University of Toledo Athletics)
Michigan State has far more quarterback continuity. Alessio Milivojevic starts after taking over for the final four games of 2025. In those four starts he completed 79-of-136 passes for 986 yards and seven touchdowns. Overall, he threw 10 touchdowns against three interceptions last year. Veteran transfer Cam Fancher, who has 28 career starts, gives Michigan State unusually experienced insurance behind him. (Michigan State University Athletics)
The backfield is also much more settled than last year. UConn transfer Cam Edwards arrives after playing in approximately 30 college games and gives Fitzgerald the experienced primary runner his offense traditionally prefers. Fitzgerald has repeatedly emphasized physical football, and Michigan State’s likely offensive identity should center on the run game rather than immediately asking Milivojevic to throw 40 times. (Michigan State University Athletics)
Toledo should not be treated as a routine MAC opponent despite its roster overhaul. The Rockets have either won or finished within one possession against each of their last five Power Four opponents, including wins over Mississippi State and Pitt. They were also picked third in the MAC preseason coaches poll despite the lack of returning starters. (University of Toledo Athletics)
There is also an obvious lookahead component for Michigan State: the Spartans host Eastern Michigan next week before traveling to Notre Dame in Week 3. That does not make Toledo meaningless, but Fitzgerald has every reason to establish his physical identity without exposing unnecessary portions of the playbook.
Bettor takeaway: Michigan State owns substantial experience advantages at quarterback and running back, but Toledo’s track record against Power Four opponents deserves respect. Richter’s first start behind an almost entirely rebuilt team is the critical personnel variable.
UTEP at No. 10 Oklahoma — 8:00 PM ET, SEC Network+
Oklahoma -41.5
Oklahoma enters as a playoff-caliber team, but the offensive line deserves more attention than the enormous spread.
John Mateer returns as the unquestioned starting quarterback after playing through the effects of a broken hand last season. Oklahoma averaged only 354.3 yards per game in 2025, and Mateer has been candid that his own play after returning from the injury was not good enough. The offseason emphasis has been on cleaner early-game execution after Oklahoma started slowly in each of the previous two openers. (ESPN 100.7 WQQO-HD2)
The important injury is at center. Jake Maikkula, Oklahoma’s 2025 starter, will miss the opening portion of the season after being injured during camp. Sophomore Ryan Fodje will start at center. Fodje received emergency center work late last season and has practiced there extensively since Maikkula went down, but the communication responsibility is significant for a young replacement. Offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle has specifically praised the developing chemistry between Fodje and Mateer. (SI)
The running-back rotation remains deliberately broad. Colorado State transfer Lloyd Avant and Xavier Robinson are listed as co-starters, with Tory Blaylock and true freshman Jonathan Hatton Jr. also expected to see work. That makes rushing-prop and touchdown usage less predictable than the point spread might imply. (Saturday Down South)
UTEP has named EJ Colson its starting quarterback. The Miners are attempting to rebuild an offense for coach Scotty Walden after winning just five total games in his first two seasons. (KFOX)
The motivational wrinkle is Oklahoma’s schedule. A trip to Michigan follows immediately. With Michigan, Georgia and Texas all looming within the next several weeks, there is considerable incentive for Oklahoma to play clean, establish the new offensive-line combination, get Mateer into rhythm and then limit unnecessary exposure once the game is secure. (SI)
Bettor takeaway: Oklahoma’s superiority is obvious, but the center change and four-man running-back rotation are highly relevant for first-half, team-total and player-prop bettors. The Week 2 Michigan game also creates an obvious reason to shorten starter exposure if Oklahoma builds the expected margin.
LIU at Kansas — 8:00 PM ET, ESPNU
Kansas -39.5
Kansas officially begins life after Jalon Daniels with one of the least experienced starting quarterbacks among Friday’s large favorites.
Isaiah “Zeke” Marshall has won the starting job over Cole Ballard. Marshall appeared in nine games last season but attempted only three passes, completing all three for 28 yards. His real contribution came as a runner: 15 carries for 160 yards, an extraordinary 10.7 yards per attempt in limited duty. (Rock Chalk Talk)
Kansas’ depth chart confirms Marshall No. 1 and Ballard No. 2, with Rice transfer Chase Jenkins third. The backfield is much deeper: Dylan Edwards OR Yasin Willis is listed at running back, with Jalen Dupree behind them. (KU Sports)
For bettors, Marshall’s profile matters because Kansas can run a relatively simple offense against LIU without putting much passing material on tape. His running ability adds an extra gap to the rushing game, and Kansas should be capable of controlling the game through Marshall, Edwards and Willis rather than asking the new quarterback to prove himself as a downfield passer.
LIU already has game experience after falling 42-21 at North Dakota. The Sharks fell behind 42-0 by halftime before scoring three times after the game was effectively decided. LIU did beat Eastern Michigan last season, so this is not a completely helpless FCS program, but the first-half collapse at North Dakota illustrates the danger against a much larger and deeper Kansas roster.
The motivational wrinkle is impossible to miss: Missouri comes to Lawrence next week for the Border War. For Kansas, this is both a quarterback-development game and the final preparation before one of the program’s most emotionally significant games in years. Lance Leipold has every reason to keep the offensive menu basic once the outcome is settled.
Bettor takeaway: Marshall’s rushing ability should translate immediately, but his passing résumé is essentially nonexistent. Anyone betting Kansas derivatives should account for the likelihood that the Jayhawks emphasize the run and protect the playbook with Missouri next.
Fresno State at No. 14 USC — 9:00 PM ET, FOX
USC -22.5
USC already has one game of information, and the injury picture remains the most important item to track through Friday.
USC beat San Jose State 42-26 after building a 35-3 lead. Starting quarterback Jayden Maiava completed 25-of-29 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Freshman Trent Mosley immediately emerged as a major piece of the receiving rotation with 118 yards. (USC Athletics)
That production came while USC was missing several projected contributors. Tanook Hines, Terrell Anderson and Jahkeem Stewart all missed the opener. Hines had 34 catches for 561 yards as a freshman last season and entered 2026 as one of USC’s most important returning receivers. Anderson transferred from NC State after averaging better than 16 yards per catch. Stewart is a Freshman All-American defensive tackle whose disruptive interior presence would materially improve USC’s front. (USC Athletics)
As of Tuesday, Hines and Anderson remain listed as questionable for Fresno State, along with several other USC receivers. Starting offensive lineman Kilian O’Connor is out for the season. The statuses of Hines, Anderson and Stewart deserve another check when USC provides its final game-day availability. (Covers.com)
The encouraging development for USC is that the young replacements looked capable. Mosley had 118 yards in his debut, and USC still produced 505 total yards and converted 9-of-13 third downs against San Jose State. (USC Athletics)
Fresno State enters with the more complicated quarterback picture. Khristian Martin and Jayden Mandal battled throughout camp, and no definitive public starter had been established in the most recent Fresno State reporting. Martin is a 6-foot-4 Maryland transfer who completed 11-of-17 passes for 113 yards in limited action last year. Mandal missed most of 2025 because of injury and has minimal recent game experience. (Yahoo Sports)
The Bulldogs should lean heavily on their running game regardless of quarterback. Rayshon Luke rushed for 702 yards and Bryson Donelson for 600 last season. Fresno State went 8-0 when reaching at least 32 rushing attempts, making possession and down-and-distance control fundamental to its offensive identity. USC’s own preview explicitly expects Fresno State to try to shorten the game and protect its new quarterback. (USC Athletics)
One correction to preseason assumptions: Matt Entz is not a first-year Fresno State coach. He coached the Bulldogs to a 9-4 record in 2025. His familiarity with USC is nevertheless unusual because he previously worked on Lincoln Riley’s USC staff. (USC Athletics)
Bettor takeaway: USC showed it can score efficiently even without Hines and Anderson, but their Friday statuses affect the depth and explosiveness of the receiving rotation. Fresno State’s quarterback announcement is the other major item to monitor. The Bulldogs’ best route to competitiveness is a high-volume rushing game that shortens USC’s possession count.
No. 7 Miami at Stanford — 9:00 PM ET, ESPN
Miami -24.5
Stanford’s Week 0 performance changes the personnel evaluation of this game more than any other result from last weekend.
The Cardinal beat Hawaii 37-27 and generated 483 yards without committing a turnover. Michigan transfer Davis Warren was excellent in his first game since missing all of 2025 with a torn ACL, completing 22-of-34 for a career-high 310 yards and a touchdown. He then went 5-of-5 for 58 yards on the game-winning drive after Stanford surrendered a 23-7 fourth-quarter lead. (GoStanford)
That matters because Warren entered the season as a genuine unknown after the long layoff. He now has demonstrated that the knee can withstand full-game work and that he can operate Tavita Pritchard’s offense under late-game pressure.
Micah Ford also confirmed his role as the lead back, carrying 25 times for 99 yards and three touchdowns. He had 85 yards before halftime and was named ACC Running Back of the Week. Freshman receiver Atticus Joseph added four catches for 52 yards and a touchdown, providing another playable target in a receiving corps that needed one. (GoStanford)
Miami still has the substantial talent advantage and begins its season with Darian Mensah as the confirmed quarterback. Mensah transferred from Duke after throwing for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns while leading the Blue Devils to an ACC championship. He enters with considerably more recent production than most first-year transfer starters. (Miami Hurricane)
The skill talent is deep. Malachi Toney returns, Duke transfer Cooper Barkate reunites with Mensah, and the running game features Mark Fletcher Jr. and Charmar Brown. The principal offensive question is the line: Miami lost four starters from last season’s group and may start highly regarded true freshmen Jackson Cantwell and Ben Congdon. Against Stanford, this is the first real test of how quickly that reconstructed line can communicate on the road. (Miami Hurricane)
One availability item remains unresolved: running back Jordan Lyle’s status has not been publicly clarified following his offseason legal issue. Miami’s coaches declined Monday to provide a substantive update. Lyle carried 35 times for 108 yards in an injury-shortened 2025 season, so his absence would affect depth more than the identity of the starting backfield because Fletcher and Brown remain available. (State of The U)
Miami’s defense is replacing first-round NFL picks Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor on the edge, with Damon Wilson II among the players expected to replace that pressure production. Stanford’s offensive line handled Hawaii well enough to produce 483 yards, so Miami’s rebuilt pass rush is worth watching closely during the opening possessions. (Miami Hurricane)
The motivational setup strongly favors Miami taking the opener seriously. Cristobal said Stanford has had Miami’s attention since January, and the Hurricanes are coming off a 13-win season that ended with a loss in the national championship game. This is also their longest trip of the season, so there is little reason to assume they view it as a routine nonconference stop. (Miami Hurricane)
Stanford also has legitimate confidence after winning its opener and is now 6-2 in its last eight home games dating to 2024. Miami crushed Stanford 42-7 last season, when the Cardinal managed only 144 total yards; Warren and Ford give this year’s Stanford offense a dramatically better early-season baseline. (GoStanford)
Bettor takeaway: Miami still has an overwhelming roster advantage, but Stanford’s Week 0 offensive performance should not be dismissed. Warren’s 310-yard, turnover-free debut and Ford’s established workload materially reduce the uncertainty surrounding the Cardinal offense. Miami’s rebuilt offensive line and pass rush are the most important unknowns on the favorite.
