Clemson and BYU meet in a non-conference battle on Tuesday that should favor Clemson to keep the game inside the number and dominate in stretches. Brad Brownell’s Tigers have built their team around physical, half-court defense, rebounding, and a methodical offense predicated on taking good shots over pushing the ball. That formula is hard to break down, especially when it forces opponents to play at a pace they are uncomfortable with. The Cougars play at a much quicker tempo than the Tigers. BYU is a well-spaced perimeter team that moves the ball to create threes and driving lanes. That can pay off, but it is also possible for teams that play this way to go cold from deep and lose efficiency all around. When their shots aren’t falling, BYU is prone to struggle on the defensive glass and in transition defense. Clemson will have the advantage by keeping this game in the half court. If the Tigers play inside-out and force BYU to defend at the end of the shot clock, they’ll create high-percentage shots and keep the Cougars’ offense off the boards. Defensively, Clemson is big and disciplined on the perimeter. They should be able to keep BYU’s shooters from getting open shots, force contested threes, and get offensive rebounds to run their own offense. This is a game that should come down to executing on a possession-by-possession basis. Clemson is the more physical team with better defensive depth, so they have an advantage there. Even if BYU can swing the momentum and get some crowd noise, Clemson’s physicality on the boards, free-throw shooting, and offensive patience will give them several paths to keep the game tight and finish in one- or two-possession territory. The in-state showdown between the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic on Tuesday sets up as a spot where the young, ascending Magic are well positioned to defend their home floor and get the win. Both teams are tied at 14-10 and in 1st place in the NBA Southeast division. The diffence is that that Magic are 9-4 at home while the Heat have a losing road record at 4-7. The Heat have also lost three straight games. Orlando has built its identity around length, versatility, and defense, with a core of big wings and forwards who can switch across multiple positions, contest shots, and make life tough on opposing scorers. Offensively, the Magic lean on their size mismatch game, attacking smaller guards in the post, driving bigger defenders off the dribble, and generating free throws and paint touches instead of living on tough jumpers. At home, that physical style tends to show up even more, as they feed off energy, get to the line, and control the boards. Miami will always bring toughness and discipline under Erik Spoelstra, but the Heat’s offense can go through stretches of stagnation, especially if the outside shots aren’t falling or they’re forced into a grind-it-out half-court game against a long, active defense like Orlando’s. The Magic’s ability to throw multiple defenders at Miami’s primary scorers, take away clean catch-and-shoot looks, and turn misses into transition chances gives them a clear path to controlling tempo. If Orlando wins the rebounding battle, limits live-ball turnovers, and continues to get balanced scoring from its young core, the matchup leans their way. With fresher legs, more size across the board, and a style that directly attacks some of Miami’s offensive limitations, the Magic are a solid choice to come away with the win on Tuesday.
